Knowing if he gives into to temptation, he will risk losing what he has with Gianna, Alfie makes a choice that changes his life forever.

The book begins many years later, after an ailing Alfie is arrested for allegedly cheating and winning millions at a casino roulette wheel. As a curious detective interrogates him, he slowly uncovers Alfie’s incredible story, and its most unlikely conclusion.

Our Review

If you’re looking for a book that’s thoughtful, touching, and genuinely enjoyable, this Mitch Albom novel is a total win. It’s beautifully written, makes you fall for the main character even when you want to shake him for his choices, and sure, it will make you laugh and cry. Above all, it feels like a reminder that we can learn from our mistakes and still move forward.

Meet Alfie, who discovers at eight that he has a magical power: he can go back in time to redo moments from his life. He only gets one do-over for each moment, and he must live with whatever happens after the second try—for better or worse. At first, Alfie uses the power for small wins—retaking a test to boost his grade or editing awkward teen moments to boost his popularity. But because changes erase the memories of the original attempt, his missteps in love become trickier. If he tries to fix his love life, he might win someone back, but the ripple effect could ruin everything else.

The storytelling is fantastic. The tale starts with Alfie as an old man in police custody, suspected of roulette tricks and a mountain of winnings. He hands the detective a notebook that reveals his life—especially his deep love for Gianna. The book’s epilogue wraps things up beautifully and feels like the perfect ending to Alfie’s journey.
